'Misty River' an enchanting experience

'Misty River' an enchanting experience

 Irene Alfieri/Special to the Mercury-Register

Misty River enchanted student matinee attendees and Oroville Concert Association members alike with a rich mix of 'Americana' music, merging their delicate vocal harmony with an array of traditional instruments. The all-female band; Carol Harley (guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin), Chris Kokesh (fiddle, guitar), Laura Quigley (acoustic bass), and Dana Abel (accordion, guitar) tours from a base in Oregon, their unique sound shaped as much by the love of traditional music as by love of the land. To the fertile Willamette Valley, the Oregon Trail propelled thousands of pioneers westward, bringing with them music of the east coast, Appalachia, and the heartland, encompassing traditional music, folk songs, country, bluegrass, Celtic, hymnody, and highly rhythmic 'jubilees.' This blend of music is identifiably American, yet shaped from various influences and annealed by the character of the country.

December 2005: A CAROL HARLEY Update

GOOD NEWS & HEALTH UPDATE FROM CAROL HARLEY; December 2005

On July 15, 2004 came the public announcement that in April I had been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, a rare form of cancer of the bone marrow/blood. During a regular, yearly visit to my doctor, they found that my white count was very elevated like 225,000. A normal person would be 4,000 & 7,000.

Preview: Healing Music, Sustaining Love: Mother with leukemia and daughter play through pain
By Paul Denison
The Register-Guard

Anyone who sees Misty River in concert might notice something special going on between two of the four women in this popular Northwest folk group: the older woman who plays guitar and the petite bass player who is young enough to be her daughter.
That's because Carol Harley, 55, and Laura Quigley, 28, are mother and daughter. It's also because they've been through a lot together.
Laura was just a toddler 26 years ago when her mother survived melanoma that was supposed to kill her.

Sad News from Misty River

Dear Misty River friends, fans and family,

It is with great sadness that we share the following news with you. One of our band members, Carol Harley, has recently been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. This is a life-threatening disease affecting the bone marrow and white blood cells. Carol has recently begun chemotherapy through drugs she administers at home and we are waiting to see how she responds to treatment before considering other measures such as a bone marrow transplant. Carol continues to be in good spirits and is taking one day at a time.

A lot of Misty River's fans are communists.

Now, that's not a comment on those across the country who enjoy the local quartet's heady blend of Americana, Celtic and folk music marked by rich harmonies, but rather an acknowledgment that the band is big in China.

Misty River with guest artist, Greg Clarke had the honor of being chosen to record the sound track for a wonderful new cooking show, a series called, Barbecue America, hosted by Vancouver, WA's own Rick Browne. The instrumental music is a mixture of traditionals and some original music including Bluegrass, Old-Time, Swing and Country music. Greg Clarke's lively "Stumptown Stomp" seems to be the theme song for the show.

EXCERPTS FROM: MISTY RIVER & TRACY GRAMMER CONCERT

Victory Review, Acoustic Music Magazine
Volume 29, Number 01, January 2004

"There are certain concerts that pass beyond being a transitory, fleeting pleasure into the realm of being… an experience. An unforgettable experience…one that you will hold in your heart as a treasure.

I was the grateful participant of such an experience: the double billing of the Portland-based band, Misty River, and Tracy Grammer performing with a full band at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, November 15, 2003.

From: Srajan Ebaen, Publisher http://www.sixmoons.com

Misty River is an all-female quartet dedicated to vocal harmonizing in the genre of Appalachian Americana. Its paths of Celtic fiddle, Bluegrass banjo and Zydeco accordion intersect with heartfelt lyrics and a healthy disdain for speed-for-speed's-sake showmanship. Think story-driven art house movie rather than Hollywood special-effects extravaganza. No honky tonk broken-down-truck, whiney 6-pack Country Blues fables, either. Far from it. That's likely due to the maturity of the Misty River ladies who must have lived full lives with their eyes open, to now pen lyrics like for "Real As A Dream" which go:

They said ok, I'll send you a "Band in a Box" format and you fill it out. I said "ok". So, I did.

Issue #144 / October-November 2003
(In the Meridian Stereo Component Review by Sue Kraft)

“If you like folksy bluegrass music, Misty River’s Live at the Backstage Gate [MRCD] is right up your alley. With the Meridian, the bass fiddle on “Black Pony” actually sounds like there’s a hollow wooden box attached to the strings. Vocals are temptingly smooth, natural, and articulate; the last track is a four-part harmony (a cappella) rendition of “America the Beautiful” that will bring tears to your eyes.” – Sue Kraft, The Absolute Sound, Oct/Nov 2003.

Review Printed in The Valley News 9-25-2003, Elgin, OR

MISTY RIVER by Ann Warren (kawarren@oregonvos.net)

A standing ovation Friday evening at Elgin Opera House brought the 4 multi-talented musicians back on stage to sing 'America the Beautiful' a cappella. Part of the appreciation stemmed from their playful interactive opening, and from the refreshing change of pace and style throughout a generously long performance. "The Audience laughter really gave us a boost," said Carol Harley, vocals, banjo, and guitar. "We haven't had so much open response before, especially during 'Home Grown Tomatoes'."
